A Special Birthday Wish from the Michigan Humanities Council

It was on this day, January 26 in 1837, that President Andrew Jackson signed the bill admitting Michigan as the nation's 26th state. Michigan first became a territory in 1805, but it was a long-awaited journey to statehood.

Gov. Rick Snyder has declared today Michigan Statehood Day, and organizations around the state are celebrating. Here's just a few examples of what's going on:

The State Theatre (Traverse City) - Held today from 1 - 8:30 p.m., the theatre will provide free birthday cake for everyone who comes to the movies, and if you answer a Michigan trivia question correctly, you get in free (warning - the questions aren't easy)! Visit www.statetheatretc.org.

Detroit Institute of Arts (Detroit) - The first 175 Michigan residents will receive free general admission to the Detroit Institute of Arts. Visit www.dia.org.

Pure Michigan (Statewide) - On www.puremichiganblog.org, visitors can find tweets and pictures of Michigan from around the state. The site will be updated throughout the day.

Michigan Historical Museum (Lansing) - On Saturday, Jan. 28, the museum will host Statehood Day festivities with costumed interpreters, craft demonstrations and musical performances. The event will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The first 100 people through the door will receive a free slice of birthday cake. Call (517) 373-3559.

Did you know ...

  • Detroit was the first capital of Michigan, not Lansing
  • Michigan has more lighthouses than any other U.S. state
  • The first soda pop manufactured in the U.S., Vernor's ginger ale, was created by accident in 1866 in Detroit
  • Michigan is the largest state producer of cherries
  • Steven T. Mason became governor of Michigan in 1834 (then a territory) at the age of 22, and to this day remains the youngest state governor in American history
  • Sault Ste. Marie, founded by Fr. Jacques Marquette in 1668, is the third oldest remaining settlement in the U.S.
  • Michigan is the only place in the world with a floating post office - the J.W. Westcott II is the only boat in the world that delivers mail to ships while they are still underway
  • In 1879, Detroit phone customers were the first in the nation to be assigned phone numbers

Zofia Stryjenska is known as the “Princess of Polish Painting.”  Her avant garde style consumed her art and her life during the period between the two World Wars.  Stryjenska’s signature “old meets new” style combined Polish country themes with modern Art Deco graphic design and vibrant colors.  Her dynamic delivery of that concept made her works some of the most recognizable and influential pieces in the panorama of Polish masters.

Kira Frabotta:dsc_2320 copy

Kira Frabotta is a sultry swing jazz vocalist influenced by the greats: Ella Fitzgerald, Peggy Lee, Mel Torme, Billy Holiday, Sarah Vaughn, Doris Day, Jo Stafford, and Anita O'Day.  She is also a singer/songwriter with compositions to her credit in the style of contemporary artists the likes of Joni Mitchell, Ricki Lee Jones, Alicia Keys, Norah Jones, and Carol King.

Kira's rich vocals display a fine sense of pitch and humor, intonation and elegance. Her clean soprano top is balanced by a smooth mezzo/alto sweetness along with her natural ability to scat like Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald.  Kira has an ear for musical harmony, pure jazz tonality, and natural phrasing which is evident in her live performances

Ms. Frabotta has worked with some of Detroit's own - talented musicians including Saxophonist, Raphael  Statin at the Detroit International Jazz Festival, Mike Jellick on keys, Detroit's own swing guitar legend, Rob Bourassa and cello virtuoso, Mike Karoub along with many others.  She is a regular to sit in as a vocalist at various jazz clubs around Detroit, most notably, Cliff Bells, close to the Fox Theatre and Comerica Park. Born in New Delhi, India, and raised in Livonia, MI, Michael is one of the most sought-after pianists in the Midwest.  His entrance into the world of music began with his private classical training at just two years old, which continued through his college years, although it was in high school where his love for jazz took shape.  In his playing, musicians, music critics, and general audiences alike easily hear him draw from his influences of both classical and jazz, in his jazz performances and compositions.  He is equally well known for his writing, arranging, and teaching, all of which have been consistently being performed through numerous appearances at various institutions and venues throughout U.S.  Mike has private studios teaching both jazz and classical theory and performance in both the metro area as well as Kalamazoo, MI.  Citing a constant need to grow through actively composing, he has been awarded commissions by groups ranging from smaller private schools to larger corporations, groups, and non-profits: Most notably, Lincoln Center.
Currently residing in the Detroit Metro area, Mike has enjoyed spending time either touring, on stage, and/or in the studio with Wynton Marsalis, Christian McBride, Jesse Palter, Rodney Whitaker, Karriem Riggins, and Bob Hurst, to name a few.  A premiere of Mr. Jellick's re-working of The Nutcracker Suite is due out this December. More about what Mike Jellick is up to including links to a schedule, blog and other "digital" extensions of him, can be found on the internet at: www.flavors.me/mikejellick.

Lech Walesa Award Ceremony in Gdansk

walesa award web

Gdansk is a beautiful place. Being there in person is necessary to truly appreciate the historical significance of what happened there only a short time ago in modern history. That city witnessed the very first crumbling of an oppressive empire known hurtfully well by Poles. I was personally invited to attend the exclusive Lech Wałęsa Award Ceremony alongside a most prestigious lineup of of Polish State officials that included Prime Minister Donald Tusk, past Prime Minister Krzysztof Bielecki, Presidential Chief of Staff Jacek Michalowski, and Undersecretary of State Beata Stelmach. The event also was attended by Poland's most prominent philanthropists, like Jan Kulczyk and Roman Rewald. President Wałęsa established the award only four years ago, with the purpose of verifying the world’s commitment to building joint cooperation between nations dedicated to peace and freedom. This year’s award was given to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva of Brazil for his continued efforts at local and international reform and advancement. I am overjoyed to report that The Polish Mission was represented at the ceremony! Along with Mike Smith of Wayne State University, we were formal guests of not only the award ceremony, but the President’s gala birthday party as well. To represent American Polonia in such a way is an honor and a privilege that I am enormously thankful to have. President Walesa is keenly interested in the role that Polish-Americans have in shaping the future, especially after having visited our campus in Orchard Lake just last year. I was proud to report to him that our community is vibrant, dedicated and strong, and he was grateful for knowing that the principles he and his foundation stand for, are still part of the fabric of Polish-American culture.

walesa birthday card

This event marks a special highlight not only for the Polish Mission, but for Polish-Americans on the whole, as we welcome a bright future of excellence. I will continue to provide immediate reports of our cooperation with the Lech Walesa Institute. Please check out my photos, and I ask that all join me in wishing President Wałęsa a very happy Birthday, and many more years of service to building a peaceful world.  For more information on the Lech Walesa Institute, please visit www.walesa.org

On Tuesday September 20th, The Polish Mission Welcomed 3-time Emmy award winning journalist Rita Cosby to the historic campus in Orchard Lake. Starting early in the morning, Rita gave a special presentation to the student body of St. Mary's Preparatory gathered in the Shrine Chapel of Our Lady of Orchard Lake. Students were very responsive as she presented the story behind her most recent book, Quiet Hero: Stories From my Father’s Past. Rita's unique perspective on the proud story of 1944 Warsaw struck a special chord with the students. Her experiences a journalist allowed her to color the black-and white story with a vivid engagement of the fine details that made up one of the most tragic moments of world history on Polish soil. Reporting from the front lines of modern-day Middle Eastern battlefields gave Cosby the tools necessary to reach the young generation: dynamic accounts and clear message. The St.Mary's Prep AP World literature class was treated to a special guest as she led an in-depth discussion of her work as a late addition to the course syllabus. Headmaster Jim Glowacki's students held the class over for an extra 45 minutes filled with questions that reached deep into the young men’s lives, some of whom related especially to the story, due to modern day veterans in their own families. Over 500 students gained powerful appreciation for the Polish story; none over the age of sixteen.

Thanks to Cosby and the Orchard Lake Schools team, the Polish reported their first-ever sold-out event later that evening. Extra tables and chairs has to be rolled out to accommodate the last minute guests to the dinner and presentation. The evening began with a very special event at the Ark museums. Led by Polish Mission team member JJ Przewozniak, a team of volunteers logged over 140 hours to completely renovate the Polish Second Corps museum on the third floor of the 1914-built building. A crowd of 25 veterans, friends and Orchard Lake leadership were in attendance as Przewozniqk presented Cosby with an 1850 Staff and Field Officer's saber, which she used to cut the ribbon to the freshly-furnished room. When asked why the American saber was chosen specifically, Polish Mission staff replied that it “...was a fitting tribute to when our campus was known as the Michigan Military Academy. It used to be known as the second West Point…” Warm lighting, larger-than life murals, and a new multi-media display were only some of the new features that greeted a crowd that included Chancellor Father Tim Whalen, State Representative Moss, and prominent Polish WWII veterans Halina Konwiak and Juliusz Presmycki. Cosby's father was a Second Corps veteran, so the ceremony was especially poignant as she mingled with happy guests amidst preserved collections of medals and artifacts from Monte Cassino. The Polish Mission safeguards a number of museum rooms dedicated to various branches of the Polish armed forces in WWII, most of which had been developed and maintained by Veterans groups and fraternal organizations. This Second Corps museum effort was the first ever renovation formally undertaken by The Polish Mission, and Przewozniak attributes the success to the volunteers, all part of the Batalion "Burza" history organization: Ken Koskodan, Tiffany Hands, Jeffrey Mogle, and Nicole Sedlak. All are in anticipation for the next museum project. Guests are welcome to tour the museum by making an appointment, or attending the monthly open house on the first Sunday of every month at 12 noon.

Rita’s dynamic portrayal of her Polish past was especially memorable due to her ability to move a very diverse crowd to applause.  A number of WWII veterans, active duty servicemen, and the SS. Cyril and Methodius Seminarians listened as she detailed how she came to grips with her father through his experiences from the front lines of Warsaw in 1944.  The story was richly colored by not only detailed accounts from the streets of Warsaw, but also the challenges she faced in re-opening a dialogue with her father.  A moving presentation of a unique Polish story brought the crowd to their feet at the evening's close.
